One Day Music Video

I was asked to create a music video to the song, “Better than a Hallelujah” sung by Amy Grant, by my senior Pastor. She asked me this as she walked by my office. When I say “walked by” I mean walked by. I wasn’t sure what she had in mind for the song but the first time I listened to it I didn’t see much.

Friday she stop by to talk about the project and asked if I could have it done this weekend for the Women Conference The Rock host in the women prisons. In the back of my mind, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do for this song but I smiled and let her know we would have something for her.

When Monday came around I began to think about what I should do for the song. Lately, Ive been praying before I work on a video that will be used to reach out to people. I asked God for help and the moment I did I pictured a story. I texted a friend to see if she could film the following day and began to write out my shot list (thanks to my directing class).

Tuesday, my friend text back telling me she wouldn’t be able to do the filming. So I did what any director would do when looking for actors, go on facebook. I found a young girl from my church and messaged her. She text me back and said her and her mom would love to do it. Beth and I grab our cameras and went to film at her house.

Because her mom wouldn’t be free until later in the day, we filmed all of the daughter scenes solo. When her mom got home we filmed her and then the ending we shot them together.

Today I edited the video together and put a color grade and exported it. It amazed me that I was able to get all this done in such a short amount of time. It encouraged me to do more filming like this for my personal projects. Filming downtown made me feel so alive. Its true what Robert Rodriguez said, “Don’t dream about being a film maker, you are one”

You will Forget Me

You will forget me in 6-8 business days.

You will no longer remember the sound of my voice.

The color of my eyes will become a faint memory

and I will soon fade away from your everyday thoughts.

Memories of me will randomly appear

but the images of me will be a blur.

The Purpose

I often wonder what people think my motives are. A few weeks ago I was praying about life and I wrote this down.

The purpose of my blog, isn’t to make my name famous or known but to make it a place of encouragement and inspiration. I don’t want people to just look at my potential but to see their own, that if I can, they can, you can. I am a tangible goal that is reachable, but I work hard and realize life is a growing process. My blog is where I am able to be me and hope other find a place where they can be themselves too.

Be creative with what you have. May money not be your goal but never sale yourself short. Use your gift and fulfill your destiny. Remember you are apart of something bigger than you think. Know that your best work is still up head.

Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Proverb 4:23

Photo Shoot: Melanie

The first time I had ever taken photos of Melanie she was pregnant with braces and I was shooting with film. You can see the shoot here. Her pregnancy photos was actually the first shoot I ever did and got paid for it. I was nerves to use film for a paying gig but it was all I had then. I captured some amazing shots that day but now digital is my best friend.

Recently some friends and I got together to do a fun photo shoot. Melanie was the third girl I shot that day. You can see Annie & Bianca if you click on their name.

It was great shooting Mel again. I love that she is a mother of two children and still looks young and beautiful. You can click on any of the photos to see more on flickr.

The Best Yet

The creative meetings for Easter started in March at church. As I looked for video examples to show the worship pastor I came across this beautiful credit intro on vimeo. It was modern and the style of music would be different for an Easter video. I showed it to the creative meeting and waited for their responds. After the video played I added, “Lets tell what happened at the Cross in a poetry spoken word form with abstract images displaying God’s powerful nature.” The creative team and pastor gave me thumbs up to try it.

Beth, who also edits with me arranged a guy from church to re-create the music and Erica, who is a song writer, to write a poem. When I finally got to creating the video, I sat at my desk not knowing how I was going to make this video. After Effects can be complex and I knew it was going to take some focus and time. Each 4 seconds was taking me 4 hours to create. I prayed and asked God for help.

When the video was complete, I showed the worship pastor and he was a little unsure how it was going to fit in. There was a chance it wasn’t going to get played. The day before Easter weekend it was time for the head pastor of The Rock, Pastor Jim to watch it. We set up the main auditorium so he could get the full effect. After it played I walked in the auditorium and sat down.

Pastor Jim looked at me and said, “I went a pastors conferences and someone had written a letter to that pastor saying they were going to leave the church because of the music and they said ‘God is not in that type of music’, the letter was written in the 1800′s about Amazing Grace. I was hoping we would have something alternative, lets play it.” I went back to my desk thinking about what my pastor told me.

I am part of an amazing generation. It’s true what God spoke to my heart when I was 18 years old, “you were born for such a time as this.”(Esther 4:14). I love how the church is embracing creativity and using it to bring God’s glory to a new generation. I know  God has given me a gift and I’m so glad the church allows me to use it to play a role in reaching lives.
