Adventure in LA

Every LA adventure I have is so different. I always discover something new about the city. Yesterday Anabel and I parked the car and walked around the city.

There is this hidden cafe that makes home style breakfast sandwiches. I discovered this place with some friends last summer and since then stop by when I am downtown.

Harlem Place Alley 124 W 4th St Los Angeles, CA 90013

After breakfast we walked to the Art Gallery. We got lost and found Little Tokyo.

City Hall 200 N Spring St Los Angeles, CA 90012

We walked around the block a few times and finally found The Moca Art Museum to see Art in the Street. Its the summer exhibit of graffiti style projects from the 1970′s. The cool thing is that it’s attracting people who wouldn’t normally step foot in an Art gallery. My film camera didn’t do to well in the low light.

Afterward we crossed the street to El Pueblo. I find this place so fascinating. They sale so many cool hand-made toys, blankets and lots of Mexican restaurants to choose from. It feels like Mexico city.

Pueblo (Union Station and Olvera Street)

We made our way to the car and drove to Santa Monica. We were planning to get in the water but it ended up being so cold. As you can see I am ready to get a tan.

After the sunset we decided to go see a movie. Anabel noticed this indie theater down the street so we went to look at the posters to see if anything interesting was playing. Anabel made her FB status “I’m @ Santa Monica with Monica @ Monica Theater 4 watching an independent film not quite by Monica :) ” It was great to see my name in lights.

Midnight in Paris by Woody Allen looked good so we bought our tickets and stood in line with 300 old people. We were the only young ones there.

To have an adventure in a big city or even in the next town next to you. Be spontaneous and let the city come alive. Walk around and have some child like wonder. The best things in life are free.

Self Image

Ten years ago my self-image was distorted. Today, I am finding myself really liking who I am. As I put on my make up I  admire the shape of my eyes, the shade of my skin, my black hair, and the color of my eyes. When I look in the mirror, I smile at the way I look. I am happy and thankful to be me. I like who I am inside and out.

When I think about when I didn’t like myself and the days when I would cover my mirrors, I am thankful for the journey I had to go through. The boys that passed through my life for a minute and the words they spoke, always sweet and kind, saw something that I didn’t not. And finally at age 27, I agree. I no longer need compliments to feel good about myself, a pimple no longer has its power over me, and bad hair days are no longer a big deal.

Some might get down about getting older, looking in the mirror and seeing their face change, but each year I discover something about myself that I love. Getting older is an adventure. Being 17 was great but I am enjoy being 27 just as much and even greater. I finally know who I am, what I wanna do, where I wanna go, what I believe in and the kinda of people I wanna spend my life with.

God is amazing and has such beautiful grace that he walks us through these things.

What did you use to think about yourself ten years ago? Crazy to think ten years has gone and past.

The Fight

A few weeks ago I was doing my weekly spring cleaning. I had a big box full of stuff I no longer wanted. I began to fill it with books I never read and probably would never. I came across a book my mom had bought me at the thrift store, “Every Young Girls Battle.”  When she gave it to me I made fun of it and said, “Every young girls battle is trying to find a good-looking rich man.”

Before I threw the book in the box I opened it to a page to see what kind of read it would be. To my surprise it was very interesting.

I have trouble finishing books. I tend to get bored mid way. But this book had me intrigued.  I finished it in just a couple of weeks.

The book is about how to have a healthy relationship with the opposite sex.

I never really witnessed a healthy dating relationship, in fact, I was positive it was impossible. When I say healthy, I mean a relationship where two people encourage, build, strengthen, support, push towards God, and save them selves for marriage. I’ve heard of people who have done this but I’m pretty sure they crossed a few lines while they were dating. haha.

In fact, I have a friend whose advice is, “If you wanna get married, get pregnant.” I laughed at his horrible advice but it seems that is how our culture operates.

I can recall having many conversations with friends about the battle of purity. Today’s culture doesn’t even know what that word means. I’m sure they only use it when talking about Fiji water.

“If you don’t guard your mind, you’ll find that when it comes to your relationships with the opposite sex, your resistances can be low before any encounter takes place. But you do have some choice in this matter .. you can train your mind to mind.” – Every Young Girls Battle

I didn’t realize that there are many levels of purity; mentally, emotionally, and of course physically. If the heart and mind aren’t guarded, then baggage will soon build up, causing a train of unhealthy relationships. It encourages to stay pure for the sake of your future marriage. The habits that take place in your dating life don’t go away once you are committed and married.

It was a book that every guy would hate for the girl he likes to read.. unless he desires a healthy woman to marry with no crazy baggage from all her past relationships.

It’s nice to know having a healthy relationship is possible. The secret is to respect and honor one another..and to not kiss longer than three seconds. haha

Dating my Camera

I read an interesting blog post encouraging photographers to take their camera out on a date. You can read the post here. I love this question in the post:

Be a photographer because it’s what I love, or be a photographer to make money at what I love?

She answers with this line:

I’d rather “date” my camera. I’m enjoying the romance way too much to turn it into a commitment that will have me working for what I love, rather than loving my work. Photography makes me happy.

After reading the post, I knew a date with my camera is what I needed.

This photo is of Briana and her boyfriend Mario. The first frame I took was without them knowing and the second one I asked them to pose and kiss for me but then said “nah that’s not going to work” and then SNAP, I captured a real laugh.

I had to talk my nephew in to coming outside and playing with me. He loves my mom and wanted to stay inside with her. I finally got him outside and just let him play. I love how he found so much joy in playing with this fly swatter.

These two photos that I took in Big Bear worked really well together. I love the color of film!

I don’t have very many photos of me, so it was fun to get in front of the camera myself. My camera actually does double exposures. The woman on the right above my head is my mom.

My date with my film camera was fun. I’m excited to go on more.
